Comparisons paradoxes interstices is the outcome of a form of collaborative research spontaneously and autonomously conceived by a group of doctoral students of Universitą Iuav di Venezia under the name “Tavolone”. The three methods of comparison identified in the title unfold into three days animated by discussions, presentations, posters and practical activities that interpret the multifaceted forms of research.

The initiative, organized within the “Scuola di scrittura”, aims to frame the possibilities of application and restitution of research, not only in the scientific context. Transforming the organizers into an active part of shared exercises that intersect discourses and theories, practices and productions.

The days are structured by opposing three binary terms:

Monday 4 December: Ecologies–Energies

Tuesday 5 December: Material–Immaterial

Wednesday 6 December: Methods–Researches

By starting from the problematization of the binary perspective, which proceeds by juxtapositions, the three days are structured to fuel generative tensions. From the oppositional relationships, knots and contrasts are identified and developed throughout the public program, giving new meanings to these words.

For activities, you must register by Friday, 1 December via Google Form. An exception to this is the lecture organised for Wednesday, 6 December in aula Tafuri at Palazzo Badoer, an activity open to PhD, bachelor’s and master’s degree students.

Ecologies–Energies

In 2021, global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels reached 37,12 billion tons (Friedlingstein et al., 2022). The construction industry alone is responsible for 45% of global air pollution, 40% of the consumption of global raw materials and ENEA data (2020), indicates that 40% of European energy consumption is attributable to domestic use. Much of the research conducted within the Iuav doctoral school moves in response to this phenomenon, which has made it possible to identify Ecologies–Energies as the fundamental theme for establishing a comparison between design disciplines.

Starting from personal experiences and interests, a collective experiment is held to question how we place ourselves in space, also through projects, considered as one of the ways of being in space. Together with the researchers invited to contribute to this day, an investigation on the influence of ecological practices in the complexity of design – from artefacts to policies – will take place, as well as an observation of how different disciplines combine synergistically to propose hyperlocal, scalable and reproducible solutions.

Keywords: scalability, territories, supply chains, margins

Kris De Decker

Founder and author of Low-Tech Magazine, a digital magazine that “refuses to assume that every problem has a high-tech solution”.

Julia Prakofjewa

Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, holds a PhD in Environmental sciences and a master’s degree in history. Her fieldwork among different ethnic groups highlights the importance of basic scientific research in unravelling complex environmental and historical dynamics. Her research focuses primarily on the circulation of ecological knowledge and practices developing across time and space.

Matteo Sartori

Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, holds a doctorate in History and is engaged in the investigation of the evolution of ecological knowledge, intertwined with various disciplines such as historical ethnobotany, environmental history of knowledge and ignorance. His research focuses on exploring themes such as migration, decoloniality and global history.

Material–Immaterial

The day unfolds starting from a series of doctoral researches that explore the territories between the material and the immaterial, between a world made of fabrics, stone and plastics, and the models and technologies developed to understand and manipulate them. Questions will investigate modes of knowledge, techniques, and tools of contemporary design that are useful for dealing with the complexity of reality, wondering how these are intertwined with the practice and with the gaze of those who design. On this day, perspectives and experiences ranging from construction, design, material development, and conservation, will be shared to exchange ideas on the current state of technical knowledge and design cultures.

Silvano Tagliagambe

emeritus professor in Philosophy of Science, he taught at the universities of Cagliari, Pisa, Rome “La Sapienza”, and at the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of Alghero of the University of Sassari. His research concerns the relationship between philosophy and physics, the development of digital technologies as a technological, cultural and social phenomenon, the organization of knowledge, and epistemology within design cultures.

Paolo Borin

researcher at the University of Brescia, and scientific director of the master’s degree “Progetto digitale BIM” at the Universitą Iuav di Venezia. His work mainly deals with the representation of architecture and the environment, in particular with the digitalisation of the built environment between digital models, clouds of points and simulations.

Pietro Nunziante

associate professor of Industrial Design at the University of Naples Federico II. His research work investigates the interaction between the dynamics of technological innovation and the material expressions of products.

Methods–Researches

A day dedicated to conveying the plurality of voices and definitions of the terms ‘method’ and ‘research’, together with the directions that these words generate and with the relationships that they allow to emerge, even temporarily, in the research path.

The Methods–Researches programme responds to the intention to clarify practice-based research methodologies, and to re-trace the generative processes behind the different areas of creative research, questioning how these processes enter the academic context. The involvement of authors, professionals, researchers, and artists who have worked with images and objects, the aim is to think about the formal and applicative declinations of a variety of research tools. This final day offers the opportunity for an active integration, oriented towards collaborative design research, by collecting present and future visions aimed at building a multifaceted and ever-evolving critical thought.
