Palazzo Badoer deriva dalla «casa del priorato di San Giovanni Evangelista» appartenente alla famiglia Badoer. Un documento del 1350 concede ai Badoer di seppellire i confratelli della Scuola di S. Giovanni Evangelista: il cimitero esiste ancora sotto il salone del palazzo e la sua presenza ha storicamente determinato la particolare tipologia planimetrica dell’edificio (che si può schematizzare a forma di «Z»), che si differenzia da quella di un qualsiasi palazzo veneziano.

 

Successivi interventi, fino alla situazione edilizia formalmente compiuta che ci è pervenuta, sono documentati al 1712; interventi interni sono stati eseguiti in seguito.

Nel 1974 lo Iuav acquista il palazzo dall’istituto di Santa Caterina, suore di Nevers.

I lavori di manutenzione straordinaria e adeguamento funzionale del palazzo come sede del Dipartimento di storia dell’architettura sono iniziati nell’aprile del 1978.

Dal 2008 Palazzo Badoer è sede della Scuola di dottorato Iuav.

Palazzo Badoer was home of San Giovanni Evangelista priory, belonging to Badoer family. In 1350 the Badoers were granted the right to bury there the brethren of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista: the cemetery still exists under the palace hall and its presence has historically determined the particular type of plan (which can be outlined in the shape of a "Z"), which differs from that of any other Venetian palace.

 

Further interventions are documented to 1712. Other operations on the interior space were carried out later.

In 1974, Iuav bought the palace belonging to the Santa Caterina Institute, Sisters of Nevers. Extraordinary maintenance and functional adaptation of the building as the location for the Department of Architectural History began in April 1978.

Palazzo Badoer has been home to Iuav school of doctoral studies since 2008.
