Università Iuav di Venezia is promoting a call for contribution to investigate the global impact of Benevolo’s thought. Albanese, cinese, coreano, farsi, francese, giapponese, greco, inglese, italiano, lituano, olandese, polacco, portoghese, rumeno, serbo, sloveno, spagnolo, svedese, tedesco, turco, ungherese: il pensiero di Leonardo Benevolo è accessibile in ventuno lingue documentabili. Chiarezza espositiva, ricchezza documentale, visione limpida e globale, precisione critica, apertura al pubblico non specialista sono certamente tra i motivi di una diffusione capillare realizzata in un mondo pre-globale e pre-informatico, in cui l’accesso al sapere era più complicato e mediato rispetto ad oggi. 

 

L’opera di Benevolo si afferma come grande classico della contemporaneità, spesso vero e proprio punto di accesso alle discipline dell’architettura e dell’urbanistica, per intere generazioni di studiosi alle latitudini più disparate: a Venezia come a Buenos Aires, Teheran o Tokyo. È forse il tentativo di allenare uno sguardo operativo verso la città, i suoi processi di formazione e modifica e la sua capacità di divenire scenario attivo della vita sociale, che ha consentito l’enorme successo globale delle opere di Benevolo. Uno sguardo troppo spesso mancante nelle letture odierne dell’ambiente costruito, e che va necessariamente riscoperto come base conoscitiva del passato ma soprattutto come motore per il progetto del futuro.

Babele Benevolo è quindi solo l’inizio del percorso di valorizzazione del fondo Leonardo Benevolo che è stato donato all’Archivio Progetti dell’Università Iuav di Venezia. Un fondo che vuole essere una fonte di ricerca viva e operativa e muoversi in maniera fluida tra le diverse anime del lavoro: piani urbani e progetti, ricerca storica, partecipazione attiva alla vita pubblica. Un fondo che intende aprirsi al mondo per indagare l’impatto globale delle opere e farne emergere riverberi, connessioni e potenzialità.

Albanian, Chinese, Korean, Farsi, French, Japanese, Greek, English, Italian, Lithuanian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, German, Turkish, Hungarian: Leonardo Benevolo's thought is accessible in twenty-one documentable languages. Clarity of presentation, richness of documentation, global vision, critical precision, openness to the non-specialist public are certainly among the reasons for a widespread diffusion achieved in a pre-global and pre-IT world, in which access to knowledge was far more complex and mediated.

Benevolo's work establishes itself as a great contemporary classic, often a true point of access to the disciplines of architecture and urban planning, for entire generations of scholars at the most different latitudes: in Venice as in Buenos Aires, Tehran or Tokyo. It is perhaps the attempt to train an operational gaze towards the city, its processes of formation and metamorphosis and its ability to become an active scenario of social life, which has allowed the enormous global success of Benevolo's works. A gaze that is too often missing in today's readings of the built environment, and which must necessarily be rediscovered as a knowledge base of the past but above all as a driving force for the design of the future.

 

Babele Benevolo is therefore only the beginning of the process of valorising the Leonardo Benevolo fund which was donated to the Archivio Progetti of Università Iuav di Venezia. A fund that aims to be a source of lively and operational research and move fluidly between the different souls of Benevolo’s work: urban planning and design, historical research, active participation in public life. A fund that intends to open up to the world to investigate the global impact of the works and bring out reverberations, connections and potential.

The exhibition Babele Benevolo, recently opened at Università Iuav di Venezia displays such richness and is the first step in the valorisation efforts of the Leonardo Benevolo archive that was recently donated to Università Iuav di Venezia.

– a short text of 3000 characters which comments on the influence of Leonardo Benevolo on your research path.

 – a photograph (vertical format) of Leonardo Benevolo's books present in your private library / your institution.

 

The results of the call for contributions will be collected in a book and will form the basis for the formation of a research network for future activities of the Benevolo archive.
