Thinking with and about decolonial curating
As part of the open encounters of the MOVIES
Moving Images Arts postgraduate specialisation programme
HEAD Haute école d'art et de design Genève +Università Iuav di Venezia (postgraduate MOVIES Moving Images Arts)
This cross-seminar aims to generate responses to the intersectional curatorial framework of the 2024 Venice Biennale and its theme Foreigners Everywhere, as well as the postcolonial and decolonial frame of several of the national pavilions and exhibitions of this year.
Wednesday 09 October
- h 9.45-11 at Iuav: Introductory seminar by Charlotte Laubard, Lorenzo Lazzari, Adeena Mey, introducing the decolonial and intersectional issues at stake in contemporary art curating and practices.
- h 11.45 Visit of the exhibition Your Ghosts Are Mine Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices, Qatar Museums, Palazzo Franchetti.
- h 14 at the Giardini: Visit of the national pavilions presenting post-colonial and decolonial projects from a Western perspective (Switzerland, Spain, Great Britain, France, Holland, Nordic countries, United-States, Canada, Australia
).
- Presentation of the Swiss Pavilion by the curator Andrea Bellini.
- Visit of the international exhibition Foreigners Everywhere of the Biennale at Giardini.
Thursday 10 October
- h 10-14 at Arsenale: Visit of the international exhibition Foreigners Everywhere of the Biennale.
- h 15-16.30 at Iuav: (Online) presentation by Amanda Carneiro about her practice as the co-curator of the international exhibition in Venice and about her projects at The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) and at the Museu Afro Brasil de São Paulo.
- h 17-19 at Iuav: Screening of a selection of films produced by the Biennale of Moving Image (Geneva) presented by the curator Andrea Bellini.
Friday 11 October
- h 9.45-11 at Iuav: (Online) presentation by Moe Satt about his art practice and about the Beyond Pressure International Performance Art Festival that he founded in Yangon, Myanmar.
- h 12 Visit of the exhibition The Spirits of Maritime Crossing, organized by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation at Palazzo Smith Mangilli Valmarana, which highlights themes of displacement, diaspora, colonialism, and hybrids of diverse cultures across Southeast Asia.
- h 14 Visit of the pavilions of Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan, Macau.
- h 16 Visit of the exhibition Nebula: 8 new video installations produced by Fondazione In Between Art Film, Complesso dell'Ospedaletto.
Saturday 12 October
- h 10-18 Workshop at Iuav Invent your own intersectional/decolonial exhibition/festival. Students will work in groups on a concept of an exhibition/festival and present it.
Sunday 13 October
- Visit of the exhibition Josefa Ntjam. swell of spæc(i)es, Accademia di Belli Arti (Zattere).
- Visit of the exhibition Pierre Huyghe. Liminal, Fondation Pinault, Punta della Dogana.

E-flux: artist-driven approaches to publishing
Founded in 1999, e-flux is an artist-led publishing platform that encompasses a variety of newsletters, publications, and other projects. Its diverse initiativestwo of which will be explored in this event, e-flux Journal and the e-flux Indexhighlight the wide-ranging possibilities of art publishing, seamlessly integrating online and print formats, while extending into the physical spaces where artistic discourse takes place.

The Multiverse of Critical Thinking Radical AI
Lecture by Razvan Ion
Imagine an AI coded by James Baldwin, Harvey Milk, and Frederic Jameson. Drawing upon queer theory, analyses of socially marginalised communities, and contemporary art curation, the talk offers a multifaceted examination of AI's societal implications. The keynote explores the concept of artificial intelligence, challenging conventional narratives and foster a nuanced understanding of AI's role in shaping our cultural landscape.
Dr R?zvan Ion is a university professor of critical thinking, journalist, academic curator, and tech queer activist. He has lead the DerAffe Vienna team in creating A.I. JARVIS, the first artificial intelligence curator in history and has founded GAY45.eu, an award-winning European queer indie journal and queer journalism school.
The event, curated by Camilla Salvaneschi and Angela Vettese, is part of the Salotto Longhena project, a collaboration between Università Iuav and Museo Ca' Pesaro.
