Reactivating local textile cultures

Rossana Carullo and Rosa Pagliarulo are lecturers in Fundamentals of Textile Design for Fashion at the Polytechnic University of Bari and have been working for over a decade on enhancing the perceptual and sensory qualities of textile surfaces. Their students’ work was exhibited at the first edition of New York Textile Month in 2016, and in 2025 they received awards from the China Fashion & Colour Association and the Quanzhou Institute of Textile and Garment. They combine a focus on production processes - which determine the qualities of textile surfaces - with the historical and symbolic values of the tangible and intangible cultures of different contexts that shape them. Together with Domenico Colabella, PhD at the Polytechnic University of Bari, they have defined an approach to the archiving of production processes in specific areas of Southern Italy, often considered marginal. Processing heritage is, first and foremost, a method capable of reactivating the potential of local textile cultures as critical tools, enabling an intercultural examination of the challenges posed by a constantly changing society.
