Biomaterials as situated practice

Carola Emanuela Godja (Emi BioLab) presents her research on algae-based biomaterials developed through a practice-based and research-through-design approach that started with her Master thesis in fashion at Università Iuav (2025). 

The lecture explores alginate as a reactive and situated material system, where water, salts, time and gesture actively shape form and process. It will also reflect on how material experimentation extends beyond the object, generating forms of shared knowledge through workshops and digital communities. Within the context of the Venetian lagoon, matter is understood not as neutral substance but as a relational medium co-determined by environment and collective practice.
