Listening is a deeply embodied, situated experience and capacity, impacting on our subjectivities and relationships in ways that demand greater critical attention. This seminar investigates listening positionality and how it is experienced across different bodies. While listening can foster empathy and connection, it can also enact forms of violence, rendering some vulnerable to dominant acoustic norms and institutional practices. Through presentations and discussions, Brandon LaBelle and Piersandra Di Matteo will investigate listening beyond the normative ear, engaging a crip time and space perspective to explore how such an approach can unsettle, expand, and reorient our understanding of what it means to listen.

The seminar is part of the 2025 Listening Biennial program in Venice, and conceived within the Curatorial Laboratory led by Piersandra Di Matteo and Edoardo Lazzari, in collaboration with SSH! Sound Studies Hub and Scuola Piccola Zattere.
