Today, creative and communicative forms such as cinema and television have expanded into the field of visual arts and, more broadly, into all domains of creativity. The term Expanded Cinema encompasses many expressions: from artists’ films to documentary and experimental cinema, from remediation practices in museum installations to interactive forms enabled by new technologies.
The new Master’s Degree Programme in Visual Arts and Expanded Cinema at Iuav responds to the growing demand for high-level cultural and artistic professionals capable of leading creative and production processes in the fields of visual arts and communication. Teaching combines theoretical and critical courses, led by professors and researchers in semiotics, art theory, philosophy of science, and aesthetics, with practical laboratories and workshops (partly taught in English), guided by curators and artists active in the international art world. The programme follows the most advanced international models of practice-based art research, allowing students to develop both individual and collective projects, and to complete their first original artistic works.
After graduation, a wide range of professional opportunities becomes available, in both public and private institutions working in the fields of visual arts, communication, and performance, as well as in radio, television, and multimedia production, and in specialised research and consultancy. Possible career paths include: visual artist, curator, filmmaker, videomaker, archive producer, consultant for auction houses or private and public collections, art critic, art historian, art director in publishing and advertising, artistic director in television, creative industries, festivals, and cultural institutions.

Student evaluation of teaching is one of the measures adopted by the University for teaching quality assurance, monitoring results and learning processes, and internal evaluation. Students of all degree programmes (except newly enrolled students) complete an annual questionnaire that gives the University a broad overview of teaching, services, and overall functioning.
Projects by Visual Arts students are displayed in exhibitions open to the public at Iuav campuses and in venues throughout the city. The exhibition “Ssshhh... I’m not gonna say it girl, I’m just thinking about it,” organized by the Advanced Visual Arts Workshop led by Cesare Pietroiusti, was held at CREA Cantieri del Contemporaneo on the Giudecca.
