Sustainable Adaptive Reuse in Venice

Uno sviluppo urbano sostenibile vede la ricerca progettuale necessariamente correlata all’esame delle problematiche ambientali e alla riqualificazione del patrimonio costruito per un suo riuso adattivo integrato. Questioni di memoria e di prospettiva futura, di riconoscibilità e di riattivazione, di appartenenza e di appropriazione si riformulano con l'avanzare della tecnologia e del digitale oltre che in rapporto a nuovi stili di vita.

Questo fornisce l’opportunità di ripensare l’esistente secondo forme di adattamento sostenibile degli spazi. Il rimodellare l’architettura tende in tal senso a stabilire un nuovo equilibrio tra il passato e il futuro, dove contesto e palinsesto alimentano l’immaginario e offrono il luogo della trasformazione secondo un approccio sempre più integrale ed ecosistemico. Il riutilizzo degli edifici, la loro riqualificazione e ristrutturazione intercetta allora i caratteri di quel Made in Italy che attraversa le culture del progetto.

Un modo di operare e una visione del fare bene, ad arte, che possa contribuire allo sviluppo dell’esistente nella ricerca di utilità e appropriatezza, tanto per il luogo quanto per una popolazione con esigenze e attitudini in rapida evoluzione. In generale un riuso adattivo si qualifica nel suo carattere ecosistemico attraverso quattro aspetti: quello ambientale, per la riduzione delle risorse necessarie; quello sociale, perché preserva le memorie collettive, supportando il benessere della comunità; quello economico, per lo sviluppo del lavoro di esperti di conservazione attiva e cura del patrimonio; e non ultimo quello abitativo, perché gli edifici vengono rimodellati per accogliere innovazioni che agevolino diversi stili di vita.

Nello specifico il programma di attività della visiting professor intende concentrarsi sull’esame di strategie di riuso adattivo e sostenibile per architetture di città fragili, sottoposte alle pressioni generate dai cambiamenti ambientali oltre che da nuovi usi.
La ricerca progettuale si rivolge pertanto alle città d’acqua e a partire proprio da Venezia, si esamineranno opere e progetti che, nell’interpretare la storia e la memoria dei luoghi, metteranno in rilievo come la rimodellazione dell’esistente, nel seguire un approccio ecosistemico e integrale, possano determinare nuovi valori e risorse per l’abitare urbano.

Con tali obiettivi e con il supporto del laboratorio PRIDE di IR.IDE, saranno organizzati seminari di ricerca e un ciclo di lezioni sui temi introdotti.

 

 

The development of a sustainable historic environment can be created through the proactive use of integrated adaptive reuse. This combines an investigation into the environmental issues with a deep knowledge of the built heritage.

Advances in technology combined with the digital revolution, and questions of memory and anticipation, understanding and reactivation, and belonging and appropriation have activated changes in lifestyle expectations. This has provided the opportunity to radically rethink the nature of the existing built environment, and also supports a growing emphasis upon the sustainable adaptation of the already built. The remodelling of architecture establishes a new balance between the past and the future. The palimpsestuous nature of the context feeds the imagination and allows an increasingly integrated ecosystemic approach to reuse. The reuse, redevelopment and renovation of buildings will interact with, and reinforce the culture of the Made in Italy project. It is artful approach combined with a positive vision for the future that can make a positive contribution to the development and redevelopment of the existing urban environment, and so provide a better, useful and more appropriate place for a population whose needs and attitudes are rapidly changing. 

In general, there are four sustainable aspects to adaptive reuse, these are: Environmental, there is a reduction in the necessary resources needed for development; Societal, reuse preserves collective memories and therefore supports the welfare of the community; Economic, adaptation encourages the development of experts in active conservation and the care of heritage; and last but not least, inhabitation, buildings can be remodelled to accommodate innovations that facilitate a more sustainable lifestyle. 

Specifically, the intended programme of activities of the visiting professor will focus on the examination of adaptive and sustainable reuse strategies for the architecture of fragile cities that are subjected to the pressures generated by both environmental change and the expectations of new uses. The design research is particularly aimed at ‘water cities’ and begins in Venice. The research will examine works and projects that, in the way that the interpretation of the history and memory of places has developed, highlights how the sustainable and integrated remodeling of the existing can determine new values and resources for urban living.

A series of lectures plus research seminars will be organised with the support of the PRIDE laboratory of IR.IDE, based upon the objectives of the introduced subject.
