brief program
The Cultural Landscape or Cultural Space of Las Médulas is located in the
Bierzo region, province of León, in Castilla y León. The result of Roman
intervention in order to work in gold mining (through the ruina montium system) over two centuries and the changes
experienced up to the present can be seen in this territory. It has been
protected in terms of heritage since 1931 as a Historic-Artistic Site, although
in the mid-1990s it was recognized as a BIC Site of Cultural Interest and at
the end of this decade it was also endowed with environmental protection as a
Natural Area. Its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 has been
a turning point in the conservation, research and enhancement of this territory
that has great landscape and heritage value.
Despite its enormous interest and potential, Las Médulas does not have a
fully integrated tourism support system, with important shortcomings that will
be raised as objectives of the workshop.
The work
teams will carry out different intervention projects in the cultural landscape
of Las Médulas, with the aim of consolidating the tourist systems, in
accordance with the possible needs raised by the Las Médulas Foundation from an
objective and real point of view.
teaching organization
The participation of a maximum number of 40 students is proposed, coming
from the different universities that are part of the network and who will join
the workshop. In order to organize the work of the project topics in a balanced
way, the enrolled students will be divided into teams composed of participants
coming from different Universities. The supervision of the work of each team
will be overseen by teachers and tutors.
The teaching method provides:
- the organization of mixed groups by origin of teachers and students to
encourage discussion on themes and approaches to the project from different
perspectives.
- the participation of representatives of the territorial management and
protection bodies, Fundación Las Médulas and General Directorate of Cultural
Heritage of the Junta de Castilla y León, as well as entities and interested
parts in the elaboration of project strategies to allow students to connect
with the varied framework of knowledge, expectations and needs of the
inhabitants and local operators.
- the participation of technicians, architects and archaeologists from
the heritage management and protection organizations of Las Médulas and its
surroundings.
study tour to Las Médulas and Bierzo region
There will be a two-day study trip to Las Médulas and the region,
visiting the work areas, as well as other visits to architecture and landscapes
of interest in the Bierzo region, spending the night in the city of Ponferrada.
