Construction
of the statistical database
Part of the papers analysis focused on the construction of a statistical
database to identify the most used words.
The statistical study of the essays presented by the authors was carried
out using a data management and analysis application (MAXQDA) which allowed to
identify a ‘population’ of about 83,394 words representing the most
used terms in relation to the topics of the conference.
Keywords
identification
The research activity can be summarized in three moments.
A preliminary phase of preparation of the papers in which the biographies
and the bibliographies were excluded. Subsequently, the documents thus obtained
were analysed to identify the frequency of the terms used in relation to the
number of texts in which they appear.
The final phase consisted of a management of the output obtained from the
analysis of the papers. The statistical population identified by the
application was processed to exclude grammatical elements not relevant to the
search (articles, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, etc.).
The final data were then manually analysed to recognise nouns, adjectives,
and verbs.

Bibliography
analysis
As for the
process adopted for the identification of the keywords, we proceeded with a
preliminary phase of data preparation. The comparative analysis allowed to
recognise the frequency of authors cited in the contributions. The final phase
involved the management of the outputs in order to interpret the results.

Localization
of the mentioned places
Starting
from the statistical outputs of the most frequent keywords, all terms not
referring to localities were excluded. The obtained database was the subject of
a geocoding operation performed using GIS (open source application used by
QGIS). The Geocoding procedure allowed to associate the names of the mentioned
places (contained in the text strings of the database) with the corresponding
geographic coordinates. The operation resulted in a graphic output which provides
a geographical and intelligible reading of the database.
