Benjamin Chavardčs, Lorenzo Ciccarelli
The Perfect Antagonist
Keywords
Vittorio Gregotti, Paolo Portoghesi, modern,
postmodern, intellectual architect
The contribution focuses on the figures of Vittorio Gregotti (1927-2020)
and Paolo Portoghesi (1931-2023) presented by the historiography and by
themselves as standard-bearers of alternative alignments: the modernity vs the
postmodernity, the rule vs the exception, the rationalism vs the mannerism, the
Neue Sachlichkeit vs the Art Nouveau, Leon Battista Alberti vs Francesco
Borromini, Milan vs Rome, the 1976 Venice Biennale vs the 1980 Biennale. Being
aware of the complexities of the two authors, their cultural nuances and their
theoretical and figurative evolution, the ring isolates and discusses some
fragments of the vast mosaic they wove to argue how, once the season of
controversy has passed, two architects who were thought to be irreducibly
distant can instead be interpreted as related when compared to the contemporary
context.
