The adversary is an issue discussed by two philosophical masks in
dialogue: a spectator and an athlete. Together they perform a critique of
sporting activity while renewing a desire for it. At the heart of this dialogue
lays the idea of a game irreducible to the economy of attention and the capture
of spectacle into which the athletic event tends to slip with the complicity of
the media. Two perspectives are thus given in tension of the scenic and
imaginative nature of sport. The exhaustion of the game as well as of the
players within the competitive and mediatic machine is countered by a desire to
free it by removing it from the alienation of purposes external to its
enjoyment. Without staging a heroic, competitive battle, the two characters
agree to occupy and deflect the field of the ‘adversary’ with
hacking gestures.
