The Esper. Blade
Runner among New Technologies and Artificial Intelligences
Keywords
Artificial intelligence,
new technologies, digital elaboration, image, 3D model
The essay analyses a
specific sequence from the film Blade Runner, the one in which a
computer – the Esper system – is used to explore a
three-dimensional space through a two-dimensional image. This series of stills
– of extraordinary importance to the film because it reveals a clue that
will enable the android hunter Rick Deckard to carry out his mission –
anticipates some of the technologies in use today and, indirectly, allows for a
confrontation with issues of stringent topicality, such as the management of 3D
models of a certain complexity, the use of artificial intelligence in everyday
life, and the relationship between reality and fiction in set design and
narrative plot. The edition of Philip Dick’s book, from which the
screenplay was taken, is also compared with Ridley Scott’s filmic
edition, including by comparing the unused scenes available in the Ultimate
Collector's Edition.
