The calculation of merit for students enrolled in degree courses under Ministerial Decree 509/1999 and subsequent decrees is based on two parameters:

• the reference number of credits
• the reference grade

The reference number of credits is the average number of credits earned by students enrolled at the University for the same number of years as you and on the same degree programme.

The reference grade is the average of the average grades obtained by all students enrolled for the same number of years as you and have taken the same subjects.
Students who have not earned any credits, eligibility exams and examinations for students transferring from other universities, are excluded from the calculation of the reference averages (grades and credits). Academic years in which studies have been interrupted or suspended are not taken into account for the calculation of merit.

The calculation of merit is done on the basis of credits earned by 10 August 2026.

Merit is determined by a merit coefficient, calculated as follows:

• students enrolled in the first year of a bachelor’s degree programme: upper secondary school final grade / average reference upper secondary school final grade. You meet the merit requirement, if your merit coefficient is greater or equal to 1.025;
• students enrolled in the first year of a master’s degree programme: final degree grade / average reference final degree grade (the degree is the qualification used for admission). You meet the merit requirement, if you merit coefficient is greater than or equal to 1.025;
• students enrolled in years following the first: merit coefficient = (A + B) / 2:
  A – credits minus reference number of credits
  B – average grade minus reference average grade

You meet the merit requirement, if your merit coefficient is greater than equal to 0 (zero).

Please note the following specific conditions for assessment of merit:

• working students: merit is calculated by halving the number of reference years, while the reference grade remains unchanged (working students status must be applied from the enrolment);
• female students with children born after enrolment, as well as unmarried, separated, divorced or widowed students with dependent children living with them: merit is calculated on the basis of the number of years of enrolment at Iuav minus one;
• students who have done military service or alternative civilian service (servizio civile), or who have experienced specific health conditions that prevented them from progressing regularly with their studies: merit is calculated on the basis of the number of years of enrolment at Iuav minus one.
