The Communication Design Studio 2 of the Master’s Degree Programme in Product, Communication and Interior Design at Università Iuav di Venezia explored the role of signage in the contexts of care, assistance and humanitarian intervention in which EMERGENCY operates, addressing communication design as a tool to orient, inform and support people in situations that are often complex, vulnerable or high-pressure.

The students of the Communication Design Studio 2 developed design proposals for different areas: signage systems for hospitals and healthcare facilities, toolkits for designing and adapting communication in healthcare settings, and wayfinding solutions on board the Life Support ship.

The work was based on an evidence-based design approach: a review of scientific literature, analysis of contexts of use, design experimentation, consultation with practitioners, and particular attention to the local cultural and expressive context. Signage was therefore understood not only as a system of directions, but as a communication infrastructure capable of influencing accessibility, understanding of spaces and the quality of people’s experience as they move through them, ultimately taking on the role of a strategic communication vehicle with a broader reach, active beyond the spaces for which it was originally conceived.
