workshop introduction
The Guanabacoa historical center has
many years ago constituted a case study for few design studios (Master level)
that took place at the Universidad Tecnológica de La Habana CUJAE. The event
that is now proposed in a form of an International Workshop with conferences and
asite study in Cuba enhances preceding collaboration with the IUAV and the
partner Institutions of the network. The success of the VENEZIA Workshop
realized in September 2015 at the IUAV and the Alqueva workshop realized in
September 2016 at the Universidade de Èvora created the seeds for further
researches in the theme of tourism, landscape, and marginal city regions.
workshop program
The exercises in the workshop will be
about urban regeneration, urban-architectonic, and architectural proposals, focusing
the preservation-transformation and sustainability, for the organization of
social space of participation, public and semipublic; building restoration and
rehabilitation, and insertion of new buildings, dedicated to the housing, the
tourism, urban functions of diverse type, and services.
The workshop will be held from
Septermber 22 until October 6, 2017. The participation of 30 foreign students, 30
Cuban students and 10 teachers and 11 tutors from UniversitàIuav di Venezia,
Universidade de Èvora, Universidad Nacional de Rosario,
Écoled’Architecture Strasbourg Tongji University and Universidad
Tecnológica de La Habana, José Antonio Echeverría CUJAE, Facultad de
Arquitectura, Grupo de Investigación “Rehabilitación Urbana y sus
Arquitecturas” (RUA)
Teachers from Universidad Tecnológica de
La Habana CUJAE, as well as experts from the country will join this group. The
activities are developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Guanabacoa
thanks to the agreements between this and CUJAE.
The activities are organized with field
trips to Havana, Varadero, Viñales, Matanzas and the historic center of
Guanabacoa, followed by the study work, classes and reviews.
The workshop enhances the discussion in
how the notion of territoriality can be embodied with new tourism praxis in
a territory of fragile structures and mass tourism.
The Architectural program proposes the
development of an architectural concept and project for the design and
realization of an observation, control and interpretation center of Guanabacoa.
The client is the Municipality of Guanabacoa. Associated to this study, there
is the need to design housing infrastructure for tourists and residents, as
well as the implementation of public spaces and new cultural centers.Guanabacoa
and the mass tourism in Cuba is today seen as anargument that needs to be
broadly studied, not only as a cultural phenomenon, a product of history and heritage,
but as well as a territory that may suggests new forms of habitation and of
permanence within its boundaries, and in relationship with a larger network of
territories that may share similar values. All this should be thought in the
dynamics of “tourism” in order that the concept of
“tourism” itself could be reinvented and enhanced by the poetics of
architecture.
Despite this program, the goal of the
Workshop, along with the conferences from invited speakers is to reflect upon
the challenges that this landscape poses, and if possible to articulate it with
other similar regions. Architecture and architectural strategies are the
intellectual methodologies to achieve that.
the goal
The workshop addresses the study that
relates heritage, tourism and architectural design in the various scales of the
city. Heritage/tourism, conservation/accessibility, conservation/use, and
residents/tourists are the heart of the workshop’s concerns. It will
address the study of possible models of intervention in the fabric of
Guanabacoa, responding to the various situations present in the area: land
already built, improvement of contact with the street –often in poor
conditions- to focus on commercial functions, extension of the areas of
habilitation, redefinition of irregular lots not built yet, proposal of new
projects on collapsed buildings. The creation of new volumes and the requalification
of the existing ones are inserted in a general plan of intervention where the
functions of tourist meeting do not exclude but coexist with those traditional
functions related to the social construction, the commerce and the spaces of
collective use. All this in order to provide practical and immediately
applicable solutions based on the scarcity of local resources, aiming at the
environmental and economic sustainability of buildings, promoting housing
improvement and forms of productive settlement, including co-working, giving
space to small business tourism and related sectors. The functional mix is then
put, as a primary condition to pursue through the architectural project.
the workshop themes
The following issues can be understood
in the urban plan supported by the Government of the Municipality of
Guanabacoa:
- Re use of the urban voids: a network
of buildings and voids in the Guanabacoa’s Historic Center and the buffer
area to be recovered and recycled as buildings related with tourism and other
activities that can improved the local economy.
- Re qualification of public spaces: a
network of public spaces to develop the needs f the local population and
outdoors tourism related activities.
- Specific program buildings: related
with the needs of the local population that incentive the cultural tourism such
as a Music Hall, Museums restorations, Cultural Centers, etc.
- Housing and mix use buildings:
restoration and recovery of existing houses and buildings, adapting them as
touristic accommodation with the input of cultural and commercial programs.
the region
Guanabacoa is one of the 15 municipalities of Havana Province, and part
of its periphery. It was founded in century XVI century, and the main part of
its territory is not urbanized, , it was an independent municipality until
1950th decade, when became part of Metropolitan Havana, now it is like small
city inside the city of Havana.
Guanabacoa, with cultural and natural values, has the most important historical
center of Havana after Old Havana, and its afrocuban heritage is the most
important in whole Havana.
the location for the workshop project
The Historical Center and its protection area will be the space for the
workshop project. The area is degraded and deteriorated, and there are many
ruins of buildings, more of them constructed during the nineteenth century.
With the increase of the motorized transport, it lost their ancient squares,
for the circulation of the transport. The challenge is to recovery that old
squares and converts the spaces around it, make it quiet and without atmosphere
contamination, make the urban regeneration, of the public space, rescue the old
buildings and construct new buildings, for a living urban center for the
resident people, tourist lodging and of passing, having as the conceptual
basis, the culture and identity of the site.
