workshop theme
The workshop aims at stimulating a discussion about the relationship
between cities of art and forms of tourism, through the specific case of
Venice. This theme has a large social and economic importance but, partially
due to its inner complexities, it’s almost absent from academic programs
in the schools of architecture. The design project is composed by a Museum of
the City and a place for touristic reception. The building wants to be an ideal
presentation of the city and its territory (the lagoon and the municipality
mainland), and is to be placed in two areas of Venice: the south side of Santa
Lucia Railway Station and the empty area set between the Cotton Mill Iuav building and the former Cold Stores.
city museum
and tourist information point
The building is a space dedicated to the presentation of the city and
its territory (the lagoon and the municipality mainland).
position
The new structure can be placed in two areas: the first is located along
the south side of Santa Lucia Station, in the triangular area that directly
faces the first Canal Grande section, before Ponte della
Costituzione; the second is located in the empty area
between the Iuav buildings of Cotton Mill and former
cold Stores.
The first area is about 1400 mq, while the
second is about 1800 mq.
Moreover, concerning the first area, it is provided the recovery, even
partial, of the stock building, which now approximately occupies half of its
length and that covers an area of about 2100 square meters.
public
space
Together with the museum planning, particular attention to design of the
adjacent public space is required. In addition to its compositional
development, the museum has to be related to the surrounding and its existing
structures. Special attention should be given to the access issue, in order to
allow an appropriate use of the museum spaces both inside and outside.
Furthermore, to achieve a better design development, the distribution of
the people flows (tourist, residents, workers) across the two design areas
should be considered. Especially, how the flows could be modified/integrated
within a new urban transformation.
museum structure
Regarding the exhibition/operational program, the building has a triple
aim that reflects the three sections in which the main museum exhibition is
articulated.
These are structured as follows
> SECTION A_telling the story of the city
and its territory through the transformations that it has experienced over the
centuries from a physical, cultural, social and economical point of view,
giving special attention to the interaction between different aspects.
The displayed materials will be both multimedia and
“traditional” (descriptive models, exhibition panels)
> SECTION B_describing the changes that are
taking place and the programs of urban renewal in the city and its territory.
Also in this section the materials will be both multimedia and
“traditional” (descriptive models, exhibition panels)
> SECTION C_synthetic presentation of the
museum and the other existing exhibition buildings in the city and in the
territory, of the cultural events in progress and planned, of the visitable sites, with particular attention to tourist sites
outside the usual touristic flows
The new museum carries also out the task of first structure to receive
the tourist coming to the city with an information point and of support to book
excursions, events, exhibitions.
Furthermore, the building is a place open to the city, organizing
temporary exhibitions on topics regarding the city and its territory, but also
organizing meetings, conferences, debates and activating educational workshops,
mainly opened to Italian and foreign schools that visit the city itself.
The typical facilities of a modern museum building complete the
structure.
