Con la partecipazione online di due artist* in mostra, Eva Giolo e Silvi Naçi, viene presentata la settima edizione del progetto Mind the Gap, dal titolo "Intorno al gesto", che si concentra su un’esplorazione video e film della gestualità. Come sappiamo, il nostro corpo non è materia inscalfibile, viene indelebilmente segnato non solo dal trascorrere del tempo, bensì anche dai modelli culturali, sociali ed economici nei quali è immerso. Ciò implica che il corpo è un attore nel senso dell’etimo, cioè prende parte attiva e diretta a ciò che accade, è il mezzo attraverso il quale il soggetto si situa nel mondo. Il corpo è il margine o bordo dell’essere in comune, profondamente relazionale in una costante dinamica tra io e noi e in questo senso anche profondamente politico. Come ci insegnano le arti performative, il corpo è l’esperienza del contatto, dello scoprire, dell’apertura all’altro, poiché da sempre esposto al mondo e perciò profonda- mente intrecciato con la contingenza degli altri corpi. Così come il corpo, anche le sue forme gestuali ne accentuano l’attributo relazionale o comunitario derivanti da una condizione di esistenza condivisa per cui i modi di fare, di dire, di sentire e di vedere non sono mai propriamente nostri, raccolgono in sé sempre una porzione di mondo. Questa indissolubile coesistenza di un noi nell’io ci dice anche che i gesti sono un fare trasformatore del mondo, in grado di cambiarne i modelli, nonché le forme del vivere insieme. Al contempo l’azione performativa del gesto ci dice anche che la domanda ancestrale ‘che cos’è uomo’ è in costante cammino. Fin dai suoi albori la produzione filmografica e videografica, nello specifico quella artistica, si è concentrata su questo doppio flusso di rappresentazione-azione che investe la gestualità dei corpi. È in questa commistione di significati portati dal gesto che si muovono le opere presentate in questo progetto espostivo di Éric Baudelaire, Francesco Bertocco, Anouk Chambaz, Eva Giolo e Silvi Naçi.

With the online participation of two of the exhibited artists, Eva Giolo and Silvi Naçi, we'll introduce the seventh edition of the Mind the Gap project, entitled "On gesture", which revolves around a video and film exploration of gesturality. As we know, our body is not immutable; it is constantly marked not only by the passing of time, but also by its surrounding cultural, social, and economic models. This implies that the body is an actor, in the etymological sense of the term; that is, it actively and directly participates in what happens, it is the tool through which the subject exists in the world. The body is the margin or threshold of humans’ shared experience of being, it is deeply relational in a constant dynamic between I and we, and in this sense, it is also highly political. As we are taught by performative arts, the body is the experience of contact, of discovery, of the opening to the other, because it has always been exposed to the world and it is thus deeply intertwined with the contingency of other bodies. Likewise, the body’s gestural forms also stress its relational and community attribute, deriving from a condition of shared existence according to which ways of behaving, feelings, and seeing are never exclusively or properly ours, as they always welcome and assume a portion of the world. Such an indissoluble coexistence of a ‘we’ within ‘I’ also tells us that gestures are an act of making that is transformative of the world, that can alter its models, as well as the ways of living together. At the same time, the performative action of gesture tells us that the ancient question ‘what is man?’ is in progress. Since its origins, film, and video production, especially the artistic, has focused on this double flow of representation-action which informs the gesturality of bodies. The works presented in this exhibition project by Éric Baudelaire, Francesco Bertocco, Anouk Chambaz, Eva Giolo and Silvi Naçi precisely move from this mixture of meanings carried by gesture.

Eva Giolo è un’artista audiovisiva che lavora con media quali film, video e installazioni. La sua ricerca si concentra principalmente sull’esperienza del femminile, grazie all’impiego di strategie sperimentali e tecniche documentaristiche usate per esplorare i temi dell’intimità, della permanenza e della memoria, e sull’analisi del linguaggio e della semiotica. Giolo usa la macchina da presa per catturare momenti ‘banali’ del quotidiano e rivelarne gli aspetti nascosti. Suoi lavori sono stati esposti in festival, musei e gallerie a livello internazionale, tra cui MAXXI-Museo Nazionale d’Arte del XXI secolo, BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, Palazzo Strozzi, Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de La Plata Buenos Aires, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Kunsthalle Wien, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Media City Film Festival, Viennale, FIDMarseille, Cinéma du Réel e Punto de Vista. Giolo ha preso parte a residenze d’artista presso SeMA NANJI Seoul Museum of Art, WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art, CASTRO Contemporary Art Studio Roma, Residency Unlimited New York e Fogo Island Arts.

 

Silvi Naçi lavora con l’immagine e le sue politiche con diversi mezzi espressivi, tra cui fotografia, performance, immagini in movimento, testo, fibre tessili, disegno e installazione. Il suo interesse è rivolto alle sottili e violente modalità in cui decolonizzazione e migrazione influenzano e modellano un popolo, una lingua, un’identità di genere, così come dinamiche sociali e culturali. Naçi ha ottenuto una laurea in Belle arti e design e una specializzazione in Fotografia e media. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato in numerosi contesti espositivi, tra cui Manifesta 14 (Pristina), National Gallery of Art (Tirana), MAK Center (Los Angeles), MoCA Geffen (Los Angeles), Other Places Art Fair (Los Angeles). Naçi ha ottenuto il premio Tim Disney Excellence in Storytelling e la borsa Felix Gonzalez-Torres Travel Grant. Ha inoltre partecipato a diverse residenze come Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art (Berlino), Elsewhere Museum and Residency (Greensboro) ed Évora NAU (Évora).

 

Eva Giolo is an audio-visual artist working with film, video, and installation. Her work focuses on the female experience, employing experimental and documentary strategies to explore themes of intimacy, permanence, and memory, along with the analysis of language and semiotics. Giolo uses her camera to capture the ‘mundane’ moments of everyday life to reveal their hidden depth. Her works have been exhibited internationally at festivals, museums, and galleries, including MAXXI– National Museum of 21st Century Art, BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, Palazzo Strozzi, Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de La Plata Buenos Aires, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Kunsthalle Wien, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Media City Film Festival, Viennale, FIDMarseille, Cinéma du Réel and Punto de Vista, to mention a few. She was an artist in residence at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts, SeMA NANJI Seoul Museum of Art, WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art, CASTRO Contemporary Art Studio Roma, Residency Unlimited New York and Fogo Island Arts.

 

Silvi Naçi work with the image and its politics in various media such as photography, performance, moving image, text, fibers, drawing and installation. Their interest lies in the subtle and violent ways that decolonization and migration affect and reshape people, language, and gender identity as well as social and cultural dynamics. Naçi holds a dual BFA in Fine Arts and Graphic Design and an MFA in Photography and Media. Their work has been presented in numerous exhibitions, like Manifesta 14 (Prishtina), National Gallery of Art (Tirana), MAK Center (Los Angeles), MoCA Geffen (Los Angeles), and the Other Places Art Fair (Los Angeles). Naçi is a recipient of the Tim Disney Excellence in Storytelling Prize, the Felix Gonzalez-Torres Travel Grant, and took part in Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art (Berlin), Elsewhere Museum and Residency (Greensboro), and Évora NAU (Évora), among other residencies.
