From the Jinpingmei to Architecture: a study on the transformation of traditionalcChinese
literature into three-dimensional space design

China was a feudal
dynasty with a long history in the past. On the one hand, the prosperity of
ancient China benefited from the high centralization under feudal rule, which
ensured social stability and consolidated social development. On the other
hand, however, such feudal rule oppressed human nature, so in ancient China,
people did not exist as individuals. Under this highly repressive rule,
literary works were also greatly restricted. Its particularity lies in the fact
that the book expresses the erotic relationship between different people
through a large number of erotic descriptions. The expression of love,
especially sex, was repressed and restrained in ancient China under feudal
notice. Especially after the Ming Dynasty, feudal centralization was further
strengthened, and the restrictions on humanity and love peaked. The book was
born in an era of repression, a significant shock to The Times.
The narrative is of
great significance to architecture. This significance for design and design
researchers has a two-way effect. On the one hand, architectural designers can
convey their ideas through narrative; On the other hand, researchers can study,
analyze and expand the expression of architects' thoughts on the narrative
embedded in architecture. Therefore, it is of great significance to discuss the
possibility of architectural design from narrative.
On the one hand, it is
the re-expression of traditional Chinese literature works in modern society. However,
on the other hand, the challenges and impacts of books should be remembered and
reflected on in every era.
The main objective of
this study is to expand the narrative research of film and architecture and
explore the possibility of creation in combination with traditional Chinese
novels. This paper attempts to carry on the spatial expression of the passages
in the novel. Explore the possibilities of architectural narrative. Design
research is mainly carried out around novels. The first is an adaptation of the
novel. The novel itself is an adaptation of the story described by the author.
The region and time of the hero are different from those of the author.
However, the novel's author directly places the time and background of his life
on the novel's characters. Therefore, when adapting the novel, we can combine
the author's creative ideas to transform part of the modern regional and
historical background into the novel and integrate the elements of the author's
living environment. Secondly, it takes the emotional change of the novel as the
background to create a space that follows the emotional change of the novel.
Through the combination of emotional deconstruction of novels and regional
studies, the author explores the expression of Chinese literary charm in
architecture while retaining local culture.
The research and
design will be developed and carried out in several parts. The first part of
the research focuses on the novel itself, analyzes its unique historical
background, and understands the reasons for the different contents in the book,
which will serve as the starting point and reference for the design research.
The second part will study the related cases of narrative architecture. Through
case studies, we can find more design thinking angles and spatial translation
methods. The third part revolves around the transformation of text and space,
combining the method of case study and my thinking in the second part. The
presentation of the design indicates the possibility between text and space
generation to explore the possibility of more space design. At the same time,
it also shows that narrative plays a vital role in highlighting local culture
and shaping diverse designs in current space design.
