The Department of History of
Architecture (dSa) of IUAV University of Venice (formerly the Institute for the
History of Art and Architecture, then the Istitute of the History of
Architecture) was founded in 1982. The first title of DSA was the Department for
Critical and Historical Analysis.
The Department, building on what
it acquired from the previous Institute, established its own tradition of
research and teaching with contributions from professors such as Bruno Zevi,
Leonardo Benevolo and Giuseppe Mazzariol.
The first Director of DSA,
Manfredo Tafuri (1982-1988), made a decisive contribution; first, in
transforming the former Institute for the History of Art and Architecture into
DSA, then launching the teaching and research activities of DSA, and finally
instituting the PhD programme within
the Department.
Paolo Morachiello was Director of
DSA from 1988-1993 and was succeeded by Ennio Concina in 1993-1994. From 1994
the Director has been Francesco Dal Co. Between 1982 and 2000 the number of
professors and researchers connected with DSA has quadrupled.
Originally housed in the
traditional home of IUAV in the Convent of the Tolentini, DSA was transferred
to its new location in the Palazzo Badoer in 1982. The definitive restoration
of the palace meets the needs of the Department, its library, the slides library, and of the L.A.M.A. (Laboratory
for the analysis of ancient materials).
