The
research cluster “Architecture and Archaeologies” of the University
Iuav of Venice announces an international call about the theme
“Archaeology’s places and contemporary uses”.
The call is
directed to the selection of some significant architectural designs or
works, concerning the definition of
valorisation strategies for archaeological sites, buildings and places of industrial archaeology, ancient borders and trails still
defining the landscapes.
The
archaeological remains in the plans and works proposed could consist of single buildings or larger areas of the city and landscape.
addressees
The call is
addressed at architects and
professionals, alone or associated, who have planned or carried out works in the last ten years (in competitions
or by commission) in which the archaeological presences, independently of the
epoch and of the culture of belongings, are a prominent and structural feature of the places’ identity.
The
projects or the works being proposed should establish direct relationships with buildings or important archaeological sites
and can be included:
> plans or works of coverings, access and
reception systems to archaeological sites, exhibition spaces, laboratories for
cataloguing and restoration, structures for the management of the archaeological
excavations, etc.
> architectural plans or works conceived in
order to qualify buildings, places and infrastructures that are part of the
industrial heritage, characterized by a particular “technical
shape” now devoid of role or function
> architectural plans or works conceived in
order to define trails, borders, signs of the ancient topography and to make
recognizable elements or systems that have a structural importance in the formation
of landscapes.
results
The
selected designs will aim to show some significant results of the architectural
design connected with the archaeologies, and they will be presented by a
professor of the research cluster during the International Convention “Archaeology’s places and
contemporary uses”, promoted by the research cluster “Architecture
and Archaeologies” of the University Iuav of Venice with the patronages
of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and of Veneto Region. In
the convention, besides the components of the area and the representatives of
the institutions, architects of great renown will participate.
The
Convention will take place in Venice the 19th and 20th of November 2009.
The
selected plans or works will be part of an exhibition
correlated to the convention, and will be finally published by press or on line, in the Iuav Digital Library.

The jury
will be formed by some professors of the “Architecture and
Archaeologies” research cluster of the University Iuav of Venice: Aldo
Aymonino, Alberto Ferlenga, Franco Mancuso, Margherita Vanore.
requested materials
To enter
the call it is necessary to send the following materials:
- documentation as call’s application form requires;
- illustrative-book
of the proposed plan or work (max 10 pages, Size Din A3 horizontal);
- designers’ profiles (max 2000 characters).
It is
possible to enter the call with several proposals, but each one should have its
own A3 Size illustrative-book.
Drawings
and pictures in the book should be
accompanied by captions and a short description of the proposed plan or work
(max 4000 characters). The description should explain the aims of the project
and the relationships with the context in which it is situated.
The title
page of the book should specify about the plan or work:
- the
designers’ names and surnames;
- the site;
- the
function;
- the
purchaser;
- the date
of project and costruction.
The application form (rtf file attached)
includes the designers’ particulars, signature and authorization to use
the requested materials in academic publications and on line.
Besides the
illustrative-book, the short profiles and
the application form, you should include a CD/DVD with:
- the A3
Size book in a pdf file;
- the
drawings included in the book in high quality jpg or tiff files;
- the short
profiles and the application form in rtf or doc files.
