Urban, regional and environmental planning have taken on new meaning in our rapidly changing world. There are many reasons for this: the widespread ecological concern about climate change, sustainability and development model sharing; the growing demand for the conservation and maintenance of historical-cultural heritage; the shift from “command-control” to systems of governance that are more willing to listening and more open to mediation; the proliferation of imbalances and inequities caused by debatable growth models. These are the processes against which the contemporary urban and regional project must be measured.

In Venice, where Italy’s very first degree in urban planning was offered in the early 1970s, these issues have been welcomed as an opportunity to bring the urban planning profession and the role of public administrators up-to-date. This challenge is being met by merging urban planning with the governance of a wider area; by making the environment a focus of spatial analyses and giving it an active project voice; and by understanding that the city, the region and the environment depend upon public policy analyses and the contradictory results of social-political processes and technological innovation.

The development of today’s communications society demands new cultural and technical skills from urban, regional and environmental planners. They must be able to interpret complex, variable and unprecedented phenomena; show astuteness and respect in using different forms of knowledge; be a part of world culture; and know how to communicate with public and private entities to create opportunities and space for projects. A new awareness is required, regarding the grave environmental and social issues looming over cities and the entire planet, the new injustices produced by the globalization processes, and the very limits of the profession itself. And new commitments must be made, to take part in an increasingly more complex decision-making processes, to be ready to give plausible answers to environmental issues as well as those of justice and democracy, and to take a stand (when necessary) that makes public interest and defence of weaker interests a top priority.

student services

The faculty follows every student’s progress closely. All of the programmes offer tutoring services throughout the student’s academic career. Internships are available through agreements stipulated with qualified public and private structures both in Italy and abroad (with or without fellowships), and include an orientation programme and the guarantee of two tutors, one from the faculty and other from the agency involved.

The faculty also organises optional travel–study opportunities and seminars (travelling and non) in Italy and abroad each year. Travelling provides a special sort of training because it allows students to get to know new places and have new experiences that enrich individual curiosity and provide opportunities for students to think about their life choices as part of their studies.
