study visas and stay permits
International
students from the European Union and non-EU students holding residency in Italy
Students with EU citizenship do not need study visas and are not required to apply for a permit to stay in Italy. They must, however, register with the Anagrafe (registry office) in the municipality in which they intend to establish residency, in accordance with the prevailing law (decreto legislativo 6 febbraio 2007, n. 30).
Non-EU citizens holding residency in Italy, and already in possesion of a stay permit, do not need study visas.
International
students from non-EU countries
All non-EU students must have a study visa issued by a competent Italian diplomatic authority in their country of residence prior to entering Italy. Within 8 days after arriving in Italy, non-EU students must apply for a residency permit for the purpose of study. The permits are issued by the Questura - Ufficio Stranieri (the local police station) in the city in which the student intends to establish residence. Non-EU students who have entered Italy without a regular entry visa or have exceeded their stay permit are considered illegal immigrants.
