Undergraduate and graduate programmes offered by the University iuav of Venice:

libraries

The mission of the Iuav Library System is to promote and develop integrated and coordinated systems for the acquisition, development, conservation, production and diffusion of bibliographical and documentary information to support the teaching and research of the Università Iuav di Venezia. The Università Iuav di Venezia is dedicated to the disciplines of Design: Architecture, Urban Planning, Arts, Design and Fashion constitute the main subjects of teaching and research for which the bibliographical collections were founded and developed. The totality of the collections held by the libraries, including the Slide Collection, the Map Collection and the Projects Archive is uniquely rich because of the wealth of its bibliographical and documentary resources in comparison with those of other national and international libraries and archives of architecture, planning and design of the 20th century.

Main Library Admission and lending policy

Entrance to the library is free and open to the public. Open-shelf books and periodicals are available for consultation. To request items located in closed areas, users have to register at the entrance of the library and then place their requests using the online catalogue. Loans are allowed to all Iuav University members (students, academic and non-academic staff, PhD students and collaborators) and to all the members of the Universities of the Veneto Region. Dissertations as well as rare and antique books, special collections and other non-circulating material are available only for consultation in the Special Collections Reading Room.

Collections

The library holds one of the most important and exhaustive collections, which is growing

and being updated continuously, of architectural and urban and regional planning books

and journals published in the 19th century.

More than 1,700 periodicals make up the holdings of Italian and international literature. The library and its holdings are a fundamental resource for the teaching and research

of the Università Iuav di Venezia and can be considered a national reference point. In recent years collections on design, fashion and theatre have been growing. Specific keynotes, handbooks and general publications to support the teaching of the university are available. Moreover, the library holdings include dissertations (since 1983), and some valuable items: the Daniela Palazzoli Special Collection; on the history of photography, the Italo Zannier Special Collection, an extraordinary collection of books and journals owned by the popular photographer and critic, and the personal collections of the architects Mario Labò, Giovanni Sardi and Giorgio Wenter Marini, which include some antique books and publications of the first half of the 20. century.

Catalogues, databases and electronic resources

All information on the library’s holdings is available on the online catalogue. The libraries of the Università Iuav di Venezia produce the most important Italian architecture and urban planning periodical index in cooperation with the Coordinamento Nazionale Biblioteche di Architettura (CNBA) and Nuova Quasco srl. More than 7.000 new records are added to the database every year. This catalogue and other bibliographical and full-text databases are also accessible to Iuav users from outside the university network (login and password are required). The discovery tool primo.iuav.it provides access to all the information-resources mentioned above as well as to the Projects Archive, the Map collection and the Slide collection catalogues and digitized images.

Cooperation

The Università Iuav di Venezia Library System promotes cooperation and projects which aim to improve and develop the dissemination of information on the subjects of Architecture and Urban Planning, with agreements and membership of The National Library Service (Servizio Bibliotecario Veneziano – SBN), The Italian Association of Architecture Libraries (CNBA), Archinet and Urbandata Associations and the University of Padua and the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice library system.

Historical information

The Library was established in 1926 with the foundation of the Regio Istituto Superiore di Architettura di Venezia, which was named Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) in 1936. At the time along with the Library, other small collections were gathered to support the teaching of new courses. Soon these collections became small branch libraries connected with the institutes of Architectural Composition, Architectural History, Conservation, etc. At the end of 1970s, these collections were moved to the Main library. Beginning in 1981 part of the Main library’s holdings were diverted for the creation of departmental libraries. In 1989 the Main Library was enlarged and reorganized with new interior fittings by the architetct Giuseppe Davanzo. In 1995, the collections of the libraries of the Conservation Department and of the Building Sciences Laboratory were merged with the collections of the Main library.  In 2005 the Library acquired a new reading room for special and ancient collections and, in 2014, was still enlarged according to a new extension project by architect Franca Pittaluga. Finally a main collection of libraries at Tolentini was being established. Now two new reading rooms open shelves, one of which is entirely reserved for journals and the other for special collections: the Giovanni Astengo Library on urban and town planning and History of architecture Library.

The building

The Tolentini monastery was built around 1591, based on a project of the Venetian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. Significant restoration works were carried out between 1960 and 1965, according to the project and supervision of Daniele Calabi and Guido Bacci. The entrance was transformed in 1985 in accordance with a design by Carlo Scarpa and under the supervision of Sergio Los.
