According to Italian regulation, it is mandatory to obtain a “Codice Fiscale” (fiscal code). It is a personal ID that lists a 16-digit alphanumerical code required for a series of economic or tax-related activities such as signing a housing contract, registering with the Italian Health Service, and buying an Italian SIM (cell phone) card.

You can request a Fiscal Code before arriving in Venezia applying for it at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your home country. You can also request a Codice Fiscale, in Venice, at the “Agenzia delle Entrate”, the government agency responsible for the authorisation of fiscal codes.

 

You will be asked to complete the necessary form (remember to bring your Passport and the student ID card and certificate of registration that the university office will give you when you register):
