The topic of the banks in the lagoon of Venice

On one hand, Venezia and its Lagoon is a very artificial space, his shape is strongly changed during the history; on other hand, it is surrounded by a life element, the water which makes it look like a very natural environment. In the beginning Venice was built from a few island, today it is a dense network of islands whereá the bank appears one of the main element to built this special city and its landscape. Marzo shows an interesting set of cases where different uses of space produce different kind of banks. It is a specific linear area where architecture try to find a balance between two opposite elements, land and water...

The lecture presents the history and development of some fortified systems from XV to XIII century and the relationships among war and fortification structures. Molteni explains expecially the fortification system of the Serenissima Republic; the dimension of this specific system is extended to all East Mediterranean and it is relevant to understand how Venezia controlled and defended itself by enemies with a system based on water mobility.

The centre of this system was Corf¨, and from plain and view of this city it is clear the relationship between military spaces and civic spaces…


Learning about war landscapes

The lecture tries to define the military space starting from some reflections and studies made by J. B. Jackson, P. Virilio, J. L. Cohen. Testori exposes some characters of war space, structures and land transformations that influence the landscape in Europe.

The performative aspect of military word returns a view of reality where architecture, landscape and war influence each other until they merge together. So it would seems that the structures of war, in addition to its destructive connotations, acquires a privileged position to know and change territories...

Development projects of the fortified systems in Spain

Federico ArÚvalo RodrÝguez, Carlos GarcÝa Vßzquez, Mercedes Linares Gˇmez del Pulgar, Antonio Tejedor Cabrera, Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Sevilla

The four professors, from ETSA of Sevilla, gave a lecture made by four different interventions, each intervention analyzes some fortifications and rehabilitation projects in Spain. Linares showsá the main characters of the Puerta De Cˇrdoba - Carmona (Sevilla) and its rehabilitation project made by Tejedor Linares & Asociados. In a similar way Tejedor presents some considerations about fortified towns as the bastioned fortification of Ceuta, la Alcazaba de Almeira and the rehabilitation project for the North face of Alhambra and Generalife of Granada. In the same city Vasquez presents the project to rebuilt a section of the Granada NazarÝ wall made by Antonio JimÚnez Torrecillas. ArÚvalo presents some fortified sites in the south of Spain as Cßdiz, Gibraltar and their landscape transformation in the centuries...

A solution for this paranoid society could be the project of Sdoof Hotel ( Same Days Out Of Fear), it is a distopian scenario about future...
