The environment is a crucial issue for the present and future of our planet, and has presented matters that have now become familiar to all: global warming, abnormal urban development, the sprawl and crisis of city suburbs, the growth of inequalities and poverty, the problem of water use and desertification, the degradation of public spaces, and the loss of connectivity and biodiversity are all issues that require the city planner’s attention and responsibility.

The Graduate Degree track in Environmental Planning and Policy addresses these issues already from the first semester, and offers an Environmental Planning workshop in the second semester, which includes compulsory courses in Energy, Advanced Technologies for the Governance of the Environment, and a set of courses for the student to choose from. In the third semester, students may opt for on-site courses (common to the first curriculum) or for a semester abroad, in Barcelona, Girona or Lisbon. In the latter case, they will have access to the Italian Graduate Degree Program in City and Environment: Planning and Policies (Class degree LM-48), and the European Master in "Planning & Policies for Cities, Environment and Landscape ". The fourth semester is dedicated to internships and final thesis preparation, with the opportunity of prolonging the period of stay abroad.

Professional profile

The Graduate Degree Programme aims at forming a professional figure that is able to hold key roles in the planning, coordination, and consultancy processes in the fields of local planning, urban design, and landscape and environmental design; a figure that is able to interact with a public and private clientele, as well as with both expert and non-expert audiences. Furthermore, he/she will be equipped with advanced skills in the use of new technologies in areas of planning and urban design.

The urban designer/planner will be able to interact with interdisciplinary work teams, as well as creatively express the knowledge and skills gained in response to new demands from society and from the market.

Graduates may work as freelancers on a self-employed basis. They must take a Professional Licensing Examination. Upon passing, they may enrol in the professional register of Architects, Planners, Landscape Designers, and Curators/Section A; or offer professional, unregulated consultancy in the areas of planning and, more in general, in that of research in urban, regional, and environmental transformation.
